Inadequate School System

I’ve blogged about this a few times before, but the subject popped up in my head again. Prepare for a disorganized rant about the school system and its failings…Why waste time on standardized tests in schools? EOGs and EOCs are not true measures of intelligence. I believe that every child is intelligent and has a natural willingness to learn, but not all children learn in the same way.To learn something, that concept needs to be applied to the real world as much as possible. Like math, for instance. We are taught algebra, geometry, and perhaps even calculus, but how does that really apply? Why are we memorizing all these formulas for anyway? Why does school have so little to do with the real world? We spend so much more of our lives out in the real world than in school, so why can’t school teach us real world concepts – or at least present abstract concepts in a real world way? In the real world, we aren’t going to sit in a room and take multiple-choice tests. We’re not going to sit in a room and listen to someone lecture for an hour. Why do so many parents rely on teachers and the school system to raise their children for them? The child’s first teacher is always the parent. If the school is not giving the child realistic skills and experiences, then it’s time for parental intervention. There are so many things that only parents can teach: religious/spiritual values, sex ed., manners and etiquette, and many other facts of real life that will never be discussed adequately in the school, due to government or other restrictions.

Determining your Child’s Hobbies

Collecting baseball cards once a craze with a number of youngsters, but I don’t remember it getting them anywhere. Child may develop an absorbing passion like; say collecting stamps or coins that lasts a lifetime or a child may flit from hobby to hobby- making models one year building kites the next year. Whatever it is, a hobby is an interest apart from academics that a child pursues out of passion, which fetches the child friends with similar interests later on. The best part is that a hobby can actually turn into a lifetime profession for some who land up as stamp curators or Museum curators. Children gain immense confidence and a sense of self-esteem from the activities they choose themselves. Children may have had a bad day at school or or they may have scored low in their exam, but they can forget their frustrations, at least temporarily, when they focus on their current interest. That’s because Hobbies do not just emerge, they must be fostered. Inorder to cater to the satisfaction and pleasure of child, it is essential to understand the importance of nurturing an interest or hobby. A parent must remember that no hobby is lesser or less dignified than the other. Help your child to choose a hobby; don’t ignore their opinions and desires, just because you think as a parent you know best.

How Do You Read The Psychology Of Your Child

Developmental psychology is perhaps one of the most constantly researched subjects under human psychology. The human brain is an amazing faculty of the human body. Filled with a million throbbing neurons and nerve fibers, it is constantly a source of thoughts, ideas and though process, with or without an external stimuli. A child’s brain is like a clean slate without the impact of social influence. However as the child grows up, the influence of the world creeps in and the child starts thinking in terms of a set pattern, which gradually becomes hardened and difficult to undo.In keeping with the set developmental changes that a child must achieve in the process of growth, there are tests devised by psychologists. These tests gauge whether the child is growing up normally or not. The tests also have a code and a rating scale by which a parent can frame a psychological report of the child’s state of mind. There are personality development tests to determine whether the child is an introvert or not.

Berlin International School: excellence in education

Almost 1000 students from more than 60 countries attend one of the school’s sections or Kita International, the independent Early Childhood Center (Early Childhood Center for children 3 to 5; Primary School for students aged 5 to 11; Middle and High School for students aged 11 to 18); all on one campus in the beautiful, leafy Dahlem in the south-west of Berlin (Zehlendorf), conveniently located close to the Kurfürstendamm and the embassies around Tiergarten.B.I.S. is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and a Cambridge Exam Center and also authorized to offer the IBPYP and IB-Diploma Programme. The school is accredited by both the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges in the U.S. and is a SAT Test Center. B.I.S. is also officially approved by the Berlin Department of Education. At B.I.S., the focus is two-fold: excellence in education and the personal growth of every student. Students learn in a multicultural community where each person is respected regardless of nationality, race, or religion. Students discover the world, its people, and its cultures through direct experience. Through play, study, and the relationships they form, students at B.I.S. learn to appreciate their own strengths and to respect differences rather than fear them. Combined with academic rigor, this experience extends outside the classroom and equips students for success and global citizenship beyond school.
